Ramadan Mubarak!
We wish you all the barakah and rewards of the blessed month of Ramadan.
This Ramadan, when you are thinking about where to send your zakat and sadaqah, we would request you to consider sending your money to An-Nisa Society to support the work being undertaken for the benefit of Muslim families in this country. In Islam, the first priority is to look after one's own family, neighbours and then the wider community. Yet, almost all of the funding donated by Muslims in the UK goes abroad, almost nothing being spent on supporting Muslims in this country.
While there is every justification in sending charity abroad, we must also support the British Muslim community, which, as statistics are increasingly showing, is on a dramatically spiralling social decline. British Muslims are the most socio-economically deprived community in this country with little support for Muslim families struggling to raise children and supporting vulnerable members of the community such as the disabled, the sick, the mentally ill and the elderly.
If we build a strong British Muslim community it will be in a better position to offer skills and resources to those who are suffering poverty and deprivation in the rest of the world. By strong, we mean economically, educationally, physically, mentally, morally, spiritually and in all other ways. We must invest resources in basic amenities and services for the support of families if we wish to see the development of a dynamic and healthy British Muslim community.
An-Nisa works for the welfare of Muslim families. We do this by setting up faith based projects, supporting Muslim groups working in local communities and creating greater awareness of the needs of Muslims amongst those who deliver vital services and those who make policies that affect Muslims.
Without your financial support we cannot continue the work we are doing for the vulnerable and disadvantaged. Help us to deliver more exciting projects and to promote greater awareness of Islam, Muslims and their needs. You can facilitate this work by making a donation through a bank transfer and/or by setting up a regular standing order.

British Muslim or Wot Projects?

An-Nisa Society held a Gala Evening on 3 July 2008 celebrating an 18 month long series of projects with young Muslims on the theme of identity. The highlight of the evening was the official launch of the 'Say It On Film' production entitled 'Reputations'. A brochure was produced showcasing the work of the young people who took part in all the projects.
Councillor Paul Lorber, Leader of Brent Council said:
“A great evening. The An-Nisa Society is a great community organisation doing interesting work in our Borough. If anyone ever has an opportunity to visit one of their events I'd encourage them to do so.”
Sarah Teather, MP, said:
“I’m a huge admirer of the An-Nisa Society. Their work with Muslim families, supporting local people but with a strong Muslim ethos is unique…It was fantastic to see young people speak in their own words about what it means to be British and a Muslim.”

- Social changes through the Qur'an: - Changing images, self-images and role expectations of men and women, their expression in ethics and law, and resulting new possibilities
The Mothers of the Faithful: They are known as the "wives of the Prophet (s)", but what did their lives, interests and activities look like? A quick recap - Early Women Scholars: "Acquiring knowledge is a religious duty for every Muslim, man and woman." How did women in the first generations then apply their knowledge of religion and law?
- Women and Science: The "traditional" role expectations that emerged in the past centuries didn't leave much space for women to be interested in science. What about the early generations?
- Women with Money and Power: Women - so we are told - are supposed to "ciltivate inner values". Does that exclude them from economical and political activities? We look at some early examples.
