Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) & the Prevent Strategy - A Muslim Response
17 February 2009
An-Nisa Society is today launching its response to the government's Prevent Strategy programme to counteract violent extremism
in Muslim communities.
In 2007 the government gave £6 million to to local authorities under the Pathfinder fund. Last year the government started rolling out £80 million of funding, £40 million of which is being given over three years to "support local authorities and community groups in improving the capacity of local communities to resist violent extremism" through the Prevent Strategy.
The Prevent Strategy targets the whole Muslim community as a
potential terrorist threat and intends to embed counter-terrorism
strategies targeting Muslims across the core services of local
councils. Our response analyses the report, its implications and flaws
and offers constructive recommendations as to what the government
should be doing to address violent extremism.

- "Members of my YOT team felt that it was going down a slippery slope once we paint everyone with these views as terrorists. Many of my colleagues in the YOT team said most young people, whether Muslim or not, among our clients are anti-establishment and anti-system. This is because they are in the criminal justice system and are very mistrustful of adults in positions of authority such as the police, courts and that includes government. .."
